How the calculator works
Choose what you want to know. How much each month? takes your goal, what you have already saved and the number of months you have, and works out the deposit needed. How long will it take? takes the deposit you can manage and counts the months until the balance reaches the goal.
Deposits are assumed at the end of each month. If your savings earn interest, enter the account's annual percentage yield (APY), the rate US banks must quote under the Truth in Savings rules. The calculator turns it into the equivalent monthly rate, so twelve months of growth equal the APY exactly. Rates change, so treat the result as a plan to revisit, not a promise. With a 0% rate it is simple division: (goal − saved) ÷ months.
Here r is the monthly rate, (1 + APY)1/12 − 1, and n the number of months. Worked example: to turn $1,500 into $10,000 in 24 months at 3% APY you would set aside $340.53 a month; your deposits add $8,172.72 and interest $327.39. The silo shows how much of the goal you already have; the chart shows how deposits and interest build it up.
Two free services that help with the online side of saving.
Disposable email · no sign-up
CleanTempMail
Rate-comparison sites, savings-tip newsletters and "free savings planner" downloads usually want an email address first. CleanTempMail gives you a free temporary inbox straight away, with no sign-up, a random or custom address on hundreds of domains, and messages deleted automatically after 3 days.
Your own inbox stays clear for statements that matter.
Seen a savings offer that looks too good to be true on a site you do not know? WebTraceCheck's free DNS and domain lookup shows the details behind its domain, and its disposable cloud browser opens unfamiliar links on an isolated desktop that is deleted after each session.
The rate your own account quotes, as an annual percentage yield, or 0 if the money sits somewhere that pays nothing. The 3% filled in is only an example. Variable rates change, so the result is an estimate; rerun it when your rate moves.
Why is the deposit a little lower with interest?
Each month's interest is added to the balance and earns interest itself, so part of the goal is filled by the account rather than by you. Over two years the effect is small; over ten or twenty years it can be a large share of the total.
Does it include tax on interest?
No. Interest may be taxable depending on where you live and the type of account. If tax applies to you, enter a lower rate to allow for it, or use 0 to see the plan from deposits alone.
Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the figures are not stored or sent. Only your currency choice and light or dark theme are remembered, in this browser's local storage.
